Let me use this opportunity to correct an impression about blobfish. People call it the ugliest fish but it does not look like this inside water. In its habitat, it looks more fishlike and not gelatinous, saggy, and somewhat comical like this.

Blobfish inhabit the deep waters off the coasts of Australia and Tasmania, where they live at depths of around 2,000 to 4,000 feet (600 to 1,200 meters) below the surface. At these depths, the water pressure is significantly higher than at the surface. Their bodies are adapted to withstand these high-pressure conditions, which gives them their unique appearance.

When a blobfish is brought to the surface, it experiences a rapid decrease in pressure. As a result, its body loses its shape and becomes saggy and blob-like. The fish’s flesh is less dense than water, allowing it to maintain its buoyancy in the deep sea. However, when it’s removed from its natural habitat and the pressure changes, it can no longer maintain its shape.

So, the infamous appearance of a blobfish as a gelatinous blob is a temporary transformation caused by the extreme pressure difference between its deep-sea home and the surface. In its natural environment, it has a more typical fish-like appearance. This adaptation helps it survive in the harsh conditions of the deep ocean, where it can find food and go about its daily life.
