Prof Pius Irhibhogbe: UBTH mourns the death of a charismatic and innovative Surgeon.
In what many stakeholders, general public, and the medical community still describe as a nightmare that has refused to go away, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital has announced the sudden passing of Prof Pius Irhibhogbe, a staff of the hospital.
Prof Irhibhogbe before his death, was a lecturer, surgeon and the founder of School of Paramedics in UBTH.
Officially announcing his death, the Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Prof Darlington Obaseki, eulogised the man who have contributed so much to the hospital and also have developed new frontiers in the management of a trauma patient in UBTH and Nigeria at large.

It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that the Management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), announces the passing of our esteemed colleague and respected elder, Professor Pius Ehiawaguan Irhibhogbe (MBBS, FWACS, FICS, FISS, FACS), a distinguished Professor of Trauma and General Surgery.
Until his death, Professor Irhibhogbe served as a Consultant Surgeon and former Head of the Department of Surgery at UBTH. He was also a former Coordinator of Accident and Emergency Services (UBTH), and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics at the University of Benin.
A pioneer in his field, Professor Irhibhogbe was the founding coordinator and guiding light of the Paramedic Training Programme at UBTH. Since its establishment in 2008, this programme stands as the first and only recognized paramedic training school in Nigeria. Under his leadership, the school has trained and graduated hundreds of highly skilled paramedics, contributing significantly to the healthcare manpower in Nigeria and beyond. This remarkable contribution continues to resonate in the healthcare landscape of the country.
Professor Irhibhogbe was instrumental in fostering international collaborations for the UBTH paramedic programme. His efforts led to partnerships with Bergen County Emergency Medical Services Training Center in Paramus, and St Joseph Regional Medical Centre, both in New Jersey, USA. His dedication and commitment to excellence have left an indelible mark on UBTH and the countless lives he touched.
As we mourn the loss of Professor Irhibhogbe, we also celebrate his life and the profound impact he had on UBTH and the medical community at large. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
