Craving fanta during pregnancy boy or girl?

Welcome to www.nimedhealth.com.ng

A lady that is 28 weeks pregnant want to find out if the reason for her craving for soft drink (soda) like fanta or coke or mirinda signifies if she is going to give birth to a baby girl or a boy.

Her message:

Doctor good evening, the last time i was pregnant I craved Coke and Pepsi and I gave birth to a baby boy…. In this my current 7 months old pregnancy, I realised I have been having serious cravings for sofa like fanta and mirinda. Could I be pregnant with a baby girl this time?

My reply:

It is a myth. Your cravings in pregnancy does not by any chance determine the sex or gender of your baby. It is just old wives tales that is beginning to take root even though we all know it is false. Craving fanta or coke during pregnancy does not in any way determine the sex of your unborn baby…. If you want to know the gender of your unborn baby, it is easy, you can ask your doctor to check for your baby’s sex during your routine ultrasound scan to monitor the well being of your baby.

Topic: Finding the sex of your baby during pregnancy, when and how?

Generally, for most pregnant women, they can find out their baby’s sex (if they choose to know anyways) during their mid-pregnancy ultrasound, this is usually between 16 and 20 weeks. However, please note, the accuracy of this prediction is solely dependent on the experience of the US technician. He/ she may not be able to tell for sure if she can’t get a clear view of the baby’s genitals. It’s actually a 50 50 chance.

Normally, while a baby’s penis or vulva begins forming as early as 6 weeks, male and female babies look very similar on ultrasound until about 14 weeks, and it can still be hard to tell them apart for several weeks after that. So be mindful and careful when you leap up in joy for that particular gender you are expecting! By 18 weeks, an ultrasound technician should be able to identify the sex if the baby is in a position that allows the genitals to be seen. If not, you may be able to find out the sex if you have another ultrasound later. So, just chill!

Another alternative method for sex determination is the use of noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT). This is a blood test that can detect Down syndrome and a few other chromosomal conditions at 10 weeks of pregnancy or later. It also looks for pieces of the male sex chromosome in the expectant mother’s blood to see if she’s carrying a boy or a girl. This is more reliable and superior to the use of US.

Other people find out their baby’s sex from a genetic test like Chorionic Villi sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis. These tests are usually used to determine whether a baby has a genetic disorder or a chromosomal abnormality like Down syndrome but may carry a slight risk of miscarriage. CVS is typically done between 10 and 13 weeks and amniocentesis between 16 and 20 weeks.

Thank you
