Dr Anona Kene from Anambra: staphylococcus aureus also known as staph aureus is a group of gram positive bacteria. Usually they exist in our body as normal flora such as on the skin, nostrils and the throat. Usually when you take out something from your throat and culture it, it will grow staph and does not mean you have a disease. However, in some certain situations when the body is overwhelmed, these staph aureus organism overgrow and become pathogens-disease causing organisms. They cause some common infections like upper respiratory tract infections, furuncles and carbuncles (boils), sinusitis, and cellulitis. They can also cause some more serious infections like pneumonia, endocarditis, blood infections (bacteremia). Infections caused by staph aureus are easy to treat depending the strain. Drugs like penicillins and cephalosporins are very effective against staphylococcos aureus. Some special strains known as methicillin resistant staph aureus are resistant to the penicillins but can be treated with another class of antibiotics known as vancomycin.
We can curb the spread of staph by proper hand washing, use of hand sanitizers, adopting proper coughing mechanism such as coughing into the elbow instead of coughing into the hands.
Staphylococcus rarely cause STI as most people presume. It does not cause watery sperm, low sperm count, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, internal health, or infertility. It is not a virus. Please do not patronize quacks.
