A cough is the body’s natural response to throw out irritants entering the respiratory passageway or airway. While most coughs are not very serious, some can be a symptom of some grave conditions of the lung or air passages eg pneumonia, asthma, COPD. So, do not neglect a persistent cough or a cough with excessive sputum or cough with blood in sputum and visit your Doctor immediately.
Though a variety of cough syrups are available for purchase over the counter, you can prepare your own cough treatment and enjoy getting rid of that nagging cough with these simple and tasty options.
-Heat half a cup of water in a boiling pot. Add one teaspoon turmeric powder, and one teaspoon black pepper. You may also add cinnamon to it. Boil this for about two to three minutes. Add one tablespoon of honey. Drink this once a day.
-A simple cough syrup can be made by combining two tablespoons of lemon juice and one tablespoon of honey and the juice of a small piece of ginger. Drink this healthy syrup several times a day.
-Hot milk with honey, turmeric and a pinch of black pepper can relieve dry cough. Have it at night.
For children, you can try this special ‘Home-made Cough Syrup’. Put ¼ cup of glycerin into a bowl. Add ¼ cup of honey. Add ¼ cup of lemon juice. Whisk the mixture thoroughly using a hand blender. Transfer it into a clan and dry jar.
Close tightly with cap and store this homemade cough syrup in the refrigerator and not freezer. It can be stored for a couple of months. Use 1 teaspoon of this cough syrup every few hours. It smells and tastes wonderful.
Honey ginger amd black pepper is also a perfect combo for sore throat.
Note: This cough syrup is not recommended for children under age 1 because the honey may cause a rare, but possibly fatal, type of food poisoning called infant botulism.
