History of Paramedics in Nigeria

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) is the pioneer of school of paramedics in Nigeria. They remain d best in Nigeria. Graduates of UBTH School of Paramedics even have d opportunity of going to d United States to work as paramedics and/or further their training. All thanks to Prof Pius Iribhogbe, the initiator and pioneer paramedics program in Nigeria. UBTH graduates the first set of paramedics.

Paramedics offer emergency care and are a key part of health care delivery.

Up till now, very few teaching hospitals or schools are accredited for paramedic training…Only UBTH has full accreditation for paramedics in the whole Nigeria as at now. This is because they have the facilities and trainers the make this happen. UBTH school of paramedics (under the institute of health technology) is very large and well established.

Nigerian paramedics can work in hospitals, NEMA, FERMA, LASEMA, SEMA, Road Safety (FRSC), NYSC, NYSC camps, etc.

Just recently, the federal Govt has approved Paramedic graduates to go for NYSC….for a compulsory one year.

Now to the main question of the day;

How to become a Paramedic in Nigeria

The first requirement to becoming a paramedic is to have already 5 credits in WAEC or NECO at all one or sometimes two sitting. You don’t use JAMB or UTME to gain admission….strictly SSCE. That is not all, for example, after choosing UBTH as your desired school, you will be required to write their local entrance exam which involves written and orals. You must pass these exams and beat the paramedics cut off mark to be considered for admission…

If you pass the paramedics entrance exams you will be offered admission following which you will will start from 100level to 500 level….during which you will commence clinical posting and practical training on basic life support, advance life support and emergency care for trauma victims.

Paramedics is a 4 to 5 years course in Nigeria…. paramedics is very lucrative in Nigeria as paramedics are well paid.
