Metronidazole commonly called flagyl (a popular antibiotic) is easily mistaken for a contraceptive these days. There is this erroneous belief that Metronidazole has sperm killing ability. Some ladies take flagyl after unprotected sex to protect pregnancy as the belief Metronidazole is spermicidal. Other ladies take flagyl to to clear and clean the womb of infection in preparation for conception or pregnancy.
Metronidazole is a popular antibiotic with no spermicidal property
Metronidazole does not prevent pregnancy
Flagyl does not prevent conception
Both flagyl and Metronidazole does not kill sperm in a woman’s body.
Because it is an antibiotic, it is true that Metronidazole can be used to clean the womb of bacteria infection.
Women who take Metronidazole (metro) after unprotected sex in order to prevent pregnancy are just wasting their time, flagyl is not a contraceptive.
Now that I have answered your question…let us discuss further …
What is Metronidazole used for?
According to WebMd, “metronidazole is an antibiotic that is used to treat a wide variety of infections. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria and parasites. This antibiotic treats only certain bacterial and parasitic infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.Metronidazole may also be used with other medications to treat certain stomach/intestinal ulcers caused by a bacteria (H. pylori).”
Dizziness, headache, stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, constipation, or metallic taste in your mouth may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new yeast infection. Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge, or other new symptoms.
Avoid alcoholic beverages and products containing propylene glycol while taking this medication and for at least 3 days after finishing this medicine because severe stomach upset/cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache, and flushing may occur.
It is not true that Metronidazole can prevent pregnancy or kill sperm…Also for women trying to conceive , metronidazole/flagyl cannot prevent conception. It is however, true that flagyl can be given to women with trichomoniasis or pelvic inflammatory disease to clean the womb.
