Physiotherapists are highly trained health care professionals who provide treatment for people suffering from physical problems arising from injury, disease, illness and ageing. Their aim is to improve a person’s quality of life by using a variety of treatments to alleviate pain and restore function or, in the case of permanent injury or disease, to lessen the effects of any dysfunction. They apply their training in striving to restore an injured or diseased body part close to its normal function. They work in close relationship with occupational therapists, medical doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers.

A physiotherapist is trained to treat all manner of people including children with cerebral palsy, preterm babies, pregnant women, people undergoing rehabilitation, athletes, the elderly (to try and get them fitter), and those needing help following heart disease, strokes, or major surgery, low back pain, and burns. Medical doctors may also send patients for physiotherapy based on their assessment.

How do you become a Physiotherapist in Nigeria?

Just like every other health-allied courses, a candidate aspiring to become a physiotherapist must have at least credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. Thereafter, write and pass the relevant university entrance examinations such as UTME and post-UTME. After 4 to 5 years of study, you will be awarded Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT), or Bachelor of Medical Rehabilitation (BMR).

The average salary of Physiotherapists in Nigeria is about N160,000 monthly after tax. Entry level salary for physiotherapists is round N80,000 – N100,000 monthly while those in middle-level positions earn the average amount and those in senior-level positions are paid around #270,000 and above monthly. With the approval and implementation of the minimum wage by the federal government and some state governments, the take home pay will surely appreciate. Also, most physiotherapists earn extra bucks from the private home service they offer their patients (clients). For example, I know a physiotherapist that gets as high as #350,000 Naira monthly from the honest services she offers her private clients.

As for intern physiotherapist salary in Nigeria, especially those in federal medical centres and teaching hospitals, they earn a monthly salary of around N70,000 – N90,000 after tax.

Now for those that want to know how much (Corper) NYSC physiotherapists earn, apart from their monthly allowance of #33,000 Naira, corper physiotherapists are paid between #40,000 – #60,000 naira depending on the state and their place of primary assignment (PPA).
