Top 10 list of suicide cases in Nigeria (with reasons from suicide notes)

This article is a compilation of shocking list of suicide cases in Nigeria

Suicide is an the act of taking ones own life for what ever reasons which may be psychological,  social, economical, or unknown. Suicide cases have skyrocketed in Nigeria in the past couple of years and it seems there is no end to it soon except we take genuine action.

Sniper, a DDT insecticide has become so popular among Nigerians for the wrong reasons- it is now an object of self harm and human death.

Over 50 persons have died from suicide related cases this year.  Nimedhealth has decided to give us a compilation of a list of suicide cases in Nigeria with real and speculated reasons for the victims carrying out the act- some left suicide notes.

1. Temitope Saka

Temitope Saka, a 17-year-old girl, died after drinking insecticide, Sniper, in the Igando area of Lagos State.

It was reported that when Saka became pregnant, her grandma insisted she packed out of the house.

A national daily reported that the victim drank the poison and began foaming in the mouth at her boyfriend’s house.

She was rushed to the Igando General Hospital where she died.

Reason for Suicide: Teenage Pregnancy,  Unwanted pregnancy

2. Chukwuemeka Akachi

A budding poet and a 400-level student of the Department of English and Literary Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, (UNN) committed suicide by taking 2 bottles of snipper earlier this year. He cited his battle with unending mental disorder and even gave a hint on his facebook page.

The suicide note reads: “Forgive me. In case you are the one who found the body, I am really sorry. It had to be someone you know.

“I have chosen Jo Nketaih’s poem as my suicide note: “They said you came looking for me. I don’t drown, I was the water,

“Where do atheists go when they die! Lol. Amen.”

Reason for suicide: Mental Disorder(depression)

3. Michael Arowosaiye

A gospel minister with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Michael Arowosaiye committed suicide in Abuja.

It was gathered that he committed suicide because he had accommodation issue which led to depression.

It was learnt that Arowosaiye, who regularly performed at RCCG programmes, was said to have hung himself with his belt on Tuesday at Sunnyvale Estate, Lokogoma District, Abuja.

The deceased, who recently ministered during a youth praise event at the church, was believed to be depressed over certain personal issues.

4. Samuel Elias

Samuel Elias, 25, a final year student of Department of Religion and Culture, University of Nigeria Nsukka allegedly committed suicide by drinking sniper. According to his mother, Elias died of depression triggered by his inability to graduate since 2016 and go for NYSC as his friends have.

5. Omotola (Ola-brain)

The Police Command in Lagos State confirmed that a 27-year-old man, Omotola, also known as `Ola-brain’, on Monday, committed suicide by hanging over alleged frustration.

It was alleged that the deceased was once a yahoo-yahoo boy before his mother stopped him from such attitude.

According to neighbors: “The young man was found roaming around the streets and probably felt frustrated after leaving the yahoo-yahoo job and decided to hang himself”.

Reasons for suicide: unemployment, joblessness, hopelessness(depression)

6. Uzaka Timi

In Delta state, Uzakah Timi Ebiweni, a 300 level medical student of the Niger Delta University (NDU) ended his life. Ebiweni took a fatal plunge into a river close to the university campus, Amassoma, located in the Southern Ijaw area council of the state after failing his examination. He was among about 50 students out of 169 who sat for the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) exam but failed. It was gathered that as a general practice every student passes the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) exams before progressing to the next level of academic pursuit. However, Ebiweni and 21 others were said to have failed beyond the level that they could be placed on academic probation for another academic year hence they had to be withdrawn.

Reason for suicide: Poor grades,  poor academic performance

7. Seun Omogaji (Dj Xgee)

Okay there is a twist to this last respect ppl give to their loved ones when gone ….Black as signs of sadness ..but in my case please Rock WHITE Cos i love this colour so much . to all have made smiled and to those i have pissed off trust me im only being Human. Enikorewa i love u so much , Eriayo u name sums it all up u are truly d reason for my Joy . Omobolanle ajoke u know i care .. Moradeke my mum may my God heal u and to my in-Laws Stay Blessed Always ,” the DJ notes.

Above is the suicide note Dj Xgee shared on his social media handle. According to his friends and family, he committed suicide by drinking sniper following marital problems.

Reason for suicide: Depression from marital disharmony.

8. Patrick Okojie

A lecturer in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Mr. Patrick Okojie,  committed suicide three days to his 47th birthday.

The decaying corpse of Okojie was found at his plot of land at Igbira Camp, along Igarra/Auchi road in Edo state, four days after he was said to have been missing.

Okojie, who left behind a wife and three children, was said to have been due for promotion to Chief Instructor by month’s ending before he died.

Family sources said he did not leave any suicide note.

It was however gathered that he had made two previous attempts at committing suicide.

The source said he left home on March 4th and was found on the 8th while the rope he used to hang himself was found on his neck.

Reason for suicide: Depression or Schizophrenia

9. Amaechi, a vendor

A 42- year- old newspaper vendor Amaechi, was on a Thursday morning found dead after hanging himself with a rope tied to his room’s ceiling fan.

Although not much could be ascertained about the deceased person’s personality, The Nation gathered Amaechi, described as a rather withdrawn person who hardly interacted with his neighbours.

According to his neighbor: “He was last seen on Monday when he was leaving the house; nobody knew when he came back to the house.

“We never knew he had hung himself in his room. It was only this morning when we were beginning to inhale some foul odour and people came to ask of him that we suspected foul play”.

Another source, who pleaded anonymity, said Amaechi was not known with any friend or wife, adding his only known family member was his older brother, who died in 2018.

Reason for suicide: Unknown. Introvert,  depressed?

10. Christabel Omore Buoro Owoicho

Though it was earlier reported that she had  committed suicide because of a strained relationship with her boyfriend.

Christabel, a 300-level student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) who was found dead in her room, was raped before she committed suicide, her friend and uncle have confirmed.

She was said to have locked herself indoors after her roommate had left the hostel, increased the volume of her music player, left a note and committed the act.
