Universities Offering Medical Biochemistry in Nigeria….
In some universities in Nigeria, their in now a clinical aspect of biochemistry called MEDICAL BIOCHEMISTRY. It is an emerging field in biochemistry that aims to dig deep into clinical Medicine.
Medical Biochemistry is the branch of Biochemistry that studies the chemical composition and processes in the human body.
The branches of medical Biochemistry include: Pharmaceutical manufacturing, clinical laboratory, molecular biology forensic investigations are some of the interesting areas of medical biochemistry.
This areas of studies is also extended to understand the biochemical exchanges that occur within the human body in relation to their application in the field of medicine. This course covers some of the topics such as molecular biology, endocrinology, and cellular biology medical biochemistry.
Medical Biochemistry emerged as a separate discipline when scientists combined Biology with organic, inorganic, and physical Chemistry, and started to explore such areas.
Universities Offering Medical Biochemistry in Nigeria
There is now 4 year undergraduate degree programme for medical Biochemistry though not all universities in Nigeria offer this course yet. Even medical students now offer medical Biochemistry as one of their undergraduate courses in the University….
So far, very few universities have been accredited by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) to offer undergraduate courses Medical Universities.
They are:
1. University of Benin (Medical Biochemistry in Uniben)
Uniben is the first school in Nigeria to carve out medical Biochemistry from Biochemistry Major in 2005 by Dr Olumese and Prof (Mrs) Oboh.
Ever since, the department has grown in leaps and bounds. Ever since, there lecturer strength has increased and they have graduated about 4 sets of medical Biochemistry students. Medical biochemistry is a key course for medical,dental and basic medical sciences.
2. University of Lagos (Medical Biochemistry in Unilag)
3. Delta State University (Medical Biochemistry in DELSU)…Medical Biochemistry is a 4 year course in DELSU
4. Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) now renamed LAU offers Medical Biochemistry as a 4 year course.
5. Gregory University Uturu (the only private University that offers Medical Biochemistry right now in Nigeria
6. Cross Rivers University of Technology (CRUTECH) offers degree programme for medical Biochemistry
O level requirements for Medical Biochemistry
It is just like that of Medicine…you are expected to get at least a credit in Mathematics, English Language, Biology, Physics and Chemistry.
