Why are fluoroquinolones contraindicated in children?

This morning I had a serious disagreement with a mother who wanted to Use ciprofloxacin on a child of 7 years old to treat typhoid fever. I had to face a herculean task to convince her that ciprofloxacin is not safe for children under 18 years of age.

According to her, she had Used amoxicillin for days but her child wasn’t responding to treatment until a nurse but not Register Nurse (RN) PRESCRIPT ciprofloxacin to her.

Now here is the reason you shouldn’t Use Fluoroquinolones in children. 👇👇👇

Fluoroquinolones such as ciprofloxacin gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, and ofloxacin are a class of antibiotics used in the treatment or Prevention of certain bacterial infections.

Why are fluoroquinolones contraindicated in children?
Children below 18 years should not be given fluoroquinolones

Most importantly, its safety in children under 18 years hasn’t been established. Because when FLUOROQUINOLONES is used in children it’s capable of causing a condition known as #Arthropathy#

🌲a joint disorder which can’t be cured but can only be managed.

🎄It is a chronic condition which usually lasts for years.

🪴It can damage the cartilage of an infant

🍓Causes nerve problems in the hand, leg, arms, feet and other Complications associated with Arthropathy.

The ONLY FDA approved uses for fluoroquinolones in children are:

-Complicated urinary tract infections
That’s it. Here, the benefits outweigh the risks.

All other uses of fluoroquinolones in children are off-label. All pediatric fluoroquinolone prescriptions for treatment of sinus infections, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, diarrhea, ear infections, etc. are off-label. The FDA has not done a cost-benefit analysis, or a safety analysis, for any use of fluroquinolones in children, other than for treatment of anthrax, plague, and complicated urinary tract infections.

Finally,I advised that if Amoxicillin is not responding instead of using ciprofloxacin that is capable of causing more harm than good you should go to hospital for further Medical Examination and treatment this will save your child from harm associated with drug abuse.

Why are fluoroquinolones contraindicated in children? You know know the reason.

Take care.
