BASIC FACTS

Candidiasis, also known as moniliasis or mycosis is a fungal(yeast) infection caused by Candida sp. More common is the C. albicans with C.tropicalis and C.glabratta as rare species. This organism affect body parts such as skin, nails, mouth, penis , vulvo-vaginal (causing vaginitis) etc . While oral infection (thrush) is common in children, vaginal candidiasis affects about 75% of females at a point in their life.

WHO IS AT RISK OF INFECTION

– Immunocompromised patients
– Diabetic patients
– Antibiotic therapy(long term use)
– Extreme ages
– Poor hygiene .

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

Depends on the affected site but typically includes;
– Erythema (Redness)
– Soreness
– Pruritus (itching) and discomfort
– Lower abdominal pains
– Whitish/ whitish-gray discharge.

DIAGNOSIS :

Symptoms of vaginal candidiasis are also present in bacterial vaginosis( an infection caused by Gadnerella vaginalis). A differential diagnosis is therefore made by microscopic demonstration of yeast cells in a clinical specimen. A culture test is also needed.

PREVENTION :

– Immune system boosters
– General and oral hygiene
– Use of probiotics in recurrent infections.

Summary;

Differences between Staphylococcus and candida albicans.

Staphylococcus is a bacteria while candida is a fungus ….

Staphylococcus infections can be treated with antibiotics while candida can be treated with antifungal drugs.

Staphylococcus causes boils, osteomyelitis and sepsis (blood infection) while candida causes yeast infection of the vagina and throat plus ringworm and athlete’s foot.

I hope that henceforth, you will able to to distinguish between #candida and #Staphylococcus.
