FIBROID

Uterine fibroids (UFs), also known as uterine leiomyomas, are benign smooth muscle neoplasms of the uterus that affect women of reproductive age (Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, 2017).

Uterine fibroids (also known as leiomyomas or myomas) are the commonest benign uterine tumors, with an estimated incidence of 20%–40% in women during their reproductive years.

They are monoclonal tumors of the uterine smooth muscle cells and consist of large amounts of extracellular matrix that contain collagen, fibronectin, and proteoglycan (International Journal of Women’s Health, 2014).

TYPES OF FIBROID

There are three types of fibroid, fibroids can be found on the outer surface of the uterus (subserosal), embedded within the myometrial wall (intramural), within the inner cavity of the uterus (submucosal), or a combination of the 3 locations.

Now to explain what the types are

Submucosal fibroids are those that are found within the uterine cavity. A submucosal fibroid can be entirely within the cavity or it can have both a submucosal and intramural component (partly embedded within the muscular wall of the uterus).

Intramural fibroids are the most common type of fibroid. These types appear within the muscular wall of the uterus. Intramural fibroids may grow larger and can stretch the womb.

Pedunculated Fibroids; Subserosal tumors can develop a stem, a slender base that supports the tumor. When they do, they’re known as pedunculated fibroids.
