2. Dr Stella Ameyo Adadevoh

A national hero, Dr Stella Ameyo Adadevoh is credited with helping to curb a wider spread of the Ebola virus in Nigeria by placing the patient zero, Patrick Sawyer, in quarantine despite pressure from the Liberian government. When threatened by Liberian officials who wanted the patient to be discharged to attend a conference, she resisted the pressure and said, “for the greater public good” she would not release him. She is known for preventing the Nigerian index case from leaving the hospital at the time of diagnosis, thereby playing a key role in curbing the spread of the virus in Nigeria. On 4 August 2014, it was confirmed that she had tested positive for Ebola virus disease and was being treated. Adadevoh died in the afternoon of 19 August 2014. The late doctor was vilified in many quarters for being involved with the spread of Ebola to Port Harcourt (Rivers State) and many have attributed his actions to a quest for financial gain. His friends and colleagues however think otherwise. It is worthy of note that Dr Enemuo successfully treated Olu-Ibukun Koye (survived the disease) but he (Enemuo) contracted the disease and died. As at his time of death, Enemuo and his wife have a three-month old female child.

We will continue to remember Dr Stella Adadevoh, Nurse Justina Ejelonu, Evelyn Uko, Dr Amos Abaniwo, Dr Iyke Enemuo and others – who died in the line of duty and made one of the biggest sacrifices for #Nigeria. Their work will continue to inspire us.
