* Fenugreek Seed

Methi or fenugreek seed is highly used in Indian cuisine and is one great herb that has shown a positive effect on the metabolism. The seed contains fiber that, of course, is great for the digestion. Fenugreek contains hypoglycaemic properties that reduce the level of glucose and enhance the insulin releasing rate.

* Bitter Gourd (Karela)

Bitter in taste Karela is highly recommended by the experts in order to control the blood sugar level. Bitter Gourd juice also helps in shedding extra pounds. The herb normalizes the level of triglycerides, boosts immunity, and is more effective when consumed raw.

* Cinnamon

Cinnamon is another Ayurvedic ingredient commonly used in India, Nigeria and other african countries. One of the best and natural remedies for diabetes, Cinnamon balances the blood sugar level, maintains insulin sensitivity, and is great for type-2 diabetics. It improves insulin that is good for weight control and reduces the risk of heart diseases.

* Garlic

* Bitter Leaf

Bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina, L (compositae) local name: Yoruba- ewuro, Hausa-shiwaka, Urhobo- olugbo. A decoction of the leaves is used for stomach pains. Also used for skin infections, as an antipyretic, laxative and antidiabetic.

* Lemon grass

Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), Local name: Isoko- eghu. When administered daily, the aqueous extract of the fresh leaf, has lowered total cholesterol and fasting plasma glucose levels in rats, as well as increasing HDL cholesterol levels. Lemon grass administration had no effect on triglyceride levels

* Ginger

Ginger (Zingiber officinale), administered
in 250 mg capsules for four days, and effectively decreased nausea and vomiting of pregnancy in a human clinical trial used for colds, toothaches, asthma, rheumatism, piles and headaches. The ripe fruit is given as laxative. Seeds boiled with milk are believed to be powerful abortificient and remedy for diabetes.

* Gingko biloba

Though does not reduce blood sugar, gingko biloba is good for brain, heart and blood vessel health. Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) has been used in traditional medicine to treat circulatory disorders and enhance memory.

Although not all studies agree, ginkgo may be especially effective in treating dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease) and intermittent claudication (poor circulation in the legs). It also shows promise for enhancing memory in older persons.

Laboratory studies have shown that ginkgo improves blood circulation by dilating blood vessels and reducing the stickiness of blood platelets.

By the same token, this means ginkgo may also increase the effect of some blood-thinning medications, including aspirin.

* Grape fruit

Grape fruit has no effect on blood sugar but helps burn fat, reduce blood cholesterol and reduce obesity which is the commonest risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus.

* Gymnema Sylvestre

One of the most effective and reliable Ayurvedic herbs for diabetes, Gymnema leaf supports healthy insulin levels, normal appetite level, normal blood sugar level, and the proper functioning of the pancreas.

Also called Gurmar, destroyer of sugar, the herb increases insulin level and enhances the cell growth of the pancreas.
