Madagascar’s COVID-19 taskforce spokeswoman Hanta Danielle Vololontiana said in a televised statement that the man had died on Saturday night.

“A man died from COVID-19 in Madagascar … he is 57 years old and a member of the medical staff,” she said.

The Indian ocean island which has reported 304 cases has been in the news in recent weeks over their purported discovery of a herbal cure for coronavirus called COVID Organics. The tonic drink is derived from artemisia — a plant with proven efficacy in malaria treatment — and other indigenous herbs.

Their President, President Andry Rajoelina , has been on both the social and mainstream media trying to promote a drug that has not gone through scientific method and clinical trials.

Critics including the World Health Organization has lambasted him for engaging in media propaganda and emotional blackmail to hoodwink the world in keying into his untested herbal remedy.

The World Health Organization has warned the general public against using the herbal medications.
