Dr Chugbo of LUTH died yesterday and was reported to have attended to a Covid -19 patient who later died 2-3 days later. To date he is the first known doctor to die in Lagos in his line of duty.

According to UK based health influencer who first shared this sad news on his twitter handle:

“A medical doctor, Dr Chugbo, working in LUTH hospital, Lagos has now died from Coronavirus.

The is the second doctor Nigeria will be losing to COVID-19 in a space of 2 weeks. Just last week here, a practicing medical doctor based in Kaduna, reportedly died of coronavirus after returning from Lagos which is the epicentre of the pandemic in Nigeria.

Many health workers in various teaching hospitals in Lagos, Benin, Abuja, Ilorin, Ibadan have been made to go on compulsory self-isolation following their exposure to patients infected with coronavirus in the past one month.

A doctor at the Irrua Specialist Hospital (COVID-19 centre) who contracted the virus in the course of treating patients with the deadly virus is presently receiving treatment in the same centre.

Because health workers taking care of COVID-19 patients are very prone to contracting the disease, stakeholders and sincere civil society organisations have been calling for increment in hazard allowance and provision of life insurance packages for those in the frontlines.

As at now, only the Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Prof Darlington Obaseki has insured the lives of health care practitioners taking care of isolated patients in the centre. It is yet to be seen if others will emulate this essential gesture.
