A BRIEF HISTORY

The school of Nursing UBTH was established to educate students both in theory and practice with a view to their becoming Registered Nurses .

The school was officially opened on 12th May 1973 by Mrs Victoria Gowon with an initial intake of 22 students in July 1973.The first two sets of student Nurses (numbering 45) graduated in December 1976 & May 1977 respectively with the school scoring 100% on each occasion.

CERTIFICATION AND DURATION OF STUDY

The School offers a 3-year training on general Nursing,after which qualified students take the Nursing and Midwifery Council Qualifying Examination for General Nurses. Successful students are awarded a Registered Nurses Certificate.

ORGANIZATION

The school is headed by a principal/Head Of Department. The first Principal was Miss J.C Cross. The current Principal is Miss M.Chukwura. Of course, you know principals are changed with time.

ADMISSION PROCESS/REQUIREMENTS

3.A written entrance examination ( Cut-off mark is determined by entrance examination committee)
4.Selection Interview

Applicants must have at least 5 credits in their O’ level exams including Maths, English,Physics, Chemistry & Biology and must be at least 18years of age. For aspiring students, please note that their entrance exams questions include: Use of English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

Successful candidates are offered a provisional admission for 6 months (Preliminary Training Section PTS), after which they must pass all courses in the PTS exam to continue their training.

ACCOMMODATION

Hostel accommodation is available and optional. All who desire to live in the hostel must be ready to abide by the hostel rules and regulations,given upon collection of admission letter, as the Hostel Manager and School Authority will not tolerate any form of indiscipline.

The hostel spaces are now enough to accommodate all UBTH nursing students, the hospital recently built new blocks of hostel within the hospital premises.

SCHOOL FEES

School fees and hostel fees may vary with the intakes. They are provided in a prospectus given upon collection of admission letter. New intakes pay about #220,000 naira which includes:tuition, accommodation , stationery, development levy etc. Old nursing students pay about #190,000 naira yearly.
