Salary of a Junior Doctor in the UK….
Nigerian medical doctor currently practicing in the United Kingdom, Dr People, took to Twitter to talk about the annual earning and monthly salary of a Junior Doctor in the UK. He compared the salary of a junior doctor with the cost and standard of living including taxes payable.
He wrote:
“WOULD I BE ABLE TO LIVE ON U.K. SALARY AS A JUNIOR DOCTOR?
So, I’ll try to answer the question about U.K. and the myth of high taxes .
People get scared with the info that you work you socks off in the UK and spend all your earnings on taxes. I think it’s exaggerated.
See below for the way the tax system works in the U.K.
I have also provided links below for you to do your estimate of tax calculation yourself.

The average U.K. JUNIOR Doctor Salary is £40k p.a working 40-48hrs/week ( on-calls inclusive, No locum included), which is about £2600 after tax. You’ll be on 20% tax rate at such salary.
If you locum for the extra 20hrs/week allowed, you can make extra £600-£800.
But let’s work with your statutory £2600
Ofcourse, as your years of experience and grade increase, your pay increases and your tax rate also increases.
Here is an Estimated Expenses for a SINGLE doctor living outside london (some people are more frugal tho):
Rent: £700
Utility( council tax/water/electricity): £400
Phone /internet: £100
Transport: £100
Shopping & Socials: £300
Black Tax& Benevolence : £200
Food: £300
Total expenditure : £2100
Total income: £2600.
Balance: £500. You can save this.
If you locum extra, you can even save more money.
For a single young person who is just starting out life, how is this not a good start?
So, yes, you’ll be able to live and survive working as a junior doctor in the U.K.
It could be better anyways.”
Any questions?
