This is because plants are very fundamental to our existence as human beings, from food to paper to drugs to even energy; plants have one use or the other in every sector.
In this article, I will show you the relevance of Botanists to oil companies and why Botanists can work in oil companies. But, who are Botanists and what is Botany? Botany is the scientific study of plants.
It includes the study of their structure, how they grow, how they can be effectively classified, the variables that impact their development, etc. Botany is a branch of biology, which studies all plant life; While Botanists are scientists who are involved in plant analysis, research, and the protection of the plant kingdom. They are also responsible for discovering the various uses of plants and plant material.
There is much hope for a B.Sc Botany graduate except you do not know what you read. In an oil company during oil exploration, Botanists are needed to analyze sample brought back from sample drills because some fossilized plant species are an indication of the presence of crude oil below along with many other indicators and Botanists are the best suited for such jobs. Also in the production of energy, Biodiesel to be precise, the Jatropha plant (Jatropha Curcas) is a low cost biodiesel feedstock with good fuel properties and more oil than other species. It is a non-edible feedstock therefore it will have no impact on food prices or the food versus fuel debate.
Many oil and gas companies with field work and facilities can use botanists in land reclamation strategies and even in extended amelioration of treated effluent wastes before releasing them into waterways. The average salary of Botanists working in the oil and gas industry is $53,252 per annum. .
The salary of Botanist like almost all other professions is dependent on the location of the job, the employer, the job description and the level of experience. Government employees tend to earn more than their colleagues in the private sector but not in all cases.
