Cats and dogs can contract worms from their mothers either in utero or through the milk. If the mother had worms herself as a young animal, a certain number of them go dormant until she gets pregnant, and then reactivate to be spread in the milk or across the placenta, to infect a new generation of puppies and kittens.
Many people believe that if their pet is dewormed as a young animal they won’t get worms again. This is untrue. An infected pet can shed thousands and thousands of eggs in each stool.
It is therefore much more common for a pet to become infected by coming in contact with the droppings of another animal while they are outside. The eggs are very sticky and can be picked up on your pet’s paws or fur and when they groom themselves they ingest the eggs and the cycle starts again.
There are various ways to prevent and treat worms. Many of the heartworm preventatives that we prescribe also prevent or treat some of the roundworm species. If your pet does contract worms there are safe and effective medications to eradicate them.
