Can I take omeprazole and iron together?
Can you take Omeprazole and ferrous sulphate together?
Taking Omeprazole and ferrous sulphate, a form of iron supplement really makes no difference if you are taking the Omeprazole for a long time, this is because, Omeprazole , pantoprazole , esoprazole and other PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) works by reducing the stomach acid causing you to have a stomach will very high PH and low stomach acid…
The stomach acid naturally is about a PH of 2, which is the optimal pH necessary for the stomach to convert iron to its active form before it can be absorb in the intestine. Low stomach acid makes this process impossible (stomach now unable to carry out its statutory function so the iron supplement and even iron from food remains in its inactive form so cannot be absorb) ..
This is the reason why persons in prolonged use of Omeprazole and other PPIs are at risk of iron deficiency anemia and even vitamin B12 deficiency.
So taking Omeprazole with ferrous sulphate or simply iron together to mitigate this side effect of Omeprazole is actually useless because the iron supplement will still be excreted the same way it was taken without been absorbed into the blood stream.
Does Omeprazole affect iron absorption?
I have already explained it. Omeprazole seriously affect iron absorption and that is why its prolonged use is discouraged….
Can ferrous fumarate be taken with Omeprazole?
Yes but it will not still be absorbed into the blood stream as Omeprazole reduces the stomach acid necessary to activate the conversion of inactive iron to active iron before absorption…it is a fruitless adventure.
I hope this is clear enough?
Another explanation to make it clearer:
❗️❗️If you are taking this medicine called Omeprazole 👇👇 especially if its been years…this may explain that low iron, low Vitamin B12 and so many other nutrients.
❗️The most prominent one is LOW IRON…Omeprazole is definitely connected to LOW FERRITIN LEVEL and LOW VITAMIN B12.
❗️Anything that will block HCL pathway or Reduce it will cause INDIGESTION AND MALABSORPTION. We need HCL to break food down properly and without this , absorption of Nutrients will also be inhibited. This is why most people on this medicine will have symptoms of Low FERRITIN level.
❤️Please check your blood result with your doctors and make sure you’re explaining all of the symptoms you’re exhibiting. Do a full blood screen to check for FERRITIN level, Vitamin B12 deficiency in particular.
❤️For example, HCL is needed for the activation of INTRINSIC FACTOR for the absorption of VITAMIN B12….so if there is not enough HCL to help in absorbing this after you eat, there will be problems associated with B12 deficiency leading to megaloblastic anemia.
❗️The same with other PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS we use for Ulcer or Acid REFLUX.
❤️We’ll discuss Symptoms of LOW FERRITIN and IRON next time.
