To some, it may sound weird that some cereals are not good for babies.
Funny thing here is that some mothers know this but they will tell you โ we that were fed with yam and oil, akpu and ofe oji, did we dieโ?
That your baby ate junks and inappropriate foods and was spared doesnโt mean that some are not suffering the after effects.
Prevention is better than cure!
There are cereals meant for babies
There are ones meant for older babies (toddlers)
While there are ones meant for adults.
Age is a determinant factor here both in their processing process and nutrient content.
What is Infant Cereal then?
Infant cereal is usually a formula made from grains and other supplements processed for infant consumption.
They are specially and carefully manufactured having this age bracket in mind to meet their nutritional requirements before the introduction of other feeding or food meant for older children.
So What is the difference between infant and adult cereal?
Have you ever tasted a babyโs food/cereal or milk once?
Any difference in taste and texture from our normal cereals and milk?
One of the major differences between these cereals is the process of hydrolysis in the production(the breakdown of large, complex and insoluble organics into smaller ones for easy metabolism)
For most Infant cereals, hydrolysis is a key processing process but this is not necessary for other family cereals.
Breaking down of large molecules of proteins and carbohydrates through hydrolysis makes it easy for baby foods to be digested because the internal organs of babies arenโt yet strong enough to digest and assimilate some food substances/nutrients.
More so, babies produce a small amount of salivary amylase (an enzyme that helps digest carbohydrates) because of their underdeveloped organs.
They also produce almost no pancreatic amylase to complete the digestion process until after their molars are developed.
The digestive systems of most babies is not strong enough to handle grains, cereal, or wheat until they are older.
When babies are fed cereals that didnโt go through hydrolysis, the complicated digestive process theyโre incapable of can destroy their intestinal lining and liver(talk for another day)
Unhydrolyzed cereal can also result in food allergies
Loss of weight
Vomiting and
Irritation.
Golden morn is not an infant cereal. Children below 2 years (It used to be on the pack that children believe 3 years should not take it. Not sure if itโs still there). It just isnโt formulated for that age group!
