POSTGRADUATE COURSES IN MICROBIOLOGY
Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, achaea, fungi and protozoa. This discipline includes fundamental research on the biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, ecology, evolution and clinical aspects of micro organisms including the host’s response to these agents. A graduate of Microbiology who decides to further his/her studies in Microbiology has a plethora of areas to choose from as Microbiology consists of a vast vast number of subdisciplines.
The following are some of the areas where they can decide to master in Microbiology;
👉General Microbiology; This involves the systematic classification of microorganisms such as viruses, fungi, protozoa and algae microbial variation and heredity. It also involves the study of microorganisms as geochemical agents including cycles of elements such as carbon then emphasis on laboratory methods involved in the isolation, cultivation, preservation and identification of microorganisms.
👉Pharmaceutical Microbiology; This involves the study of synthetic chemotherapeutic agents and antibiotics, the production and synthesis of antibiotics and antimicrobial agents as well as the quality control of pharmaceutical products. Drugs of microbial origin and separation techniques in Pharmacy are also studied.
👉Food Microbiology; This involves the study of the roles and significance of microorganisms in food, intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of food that affect microbial growth and the Indices of food sanitary growth and food microbiological standards.
👉Mycology; Advanced instruction on the various groups of fungi and their probable relationships. Function, structure and growth of specified representatives of higher and lower fungi.
👉Immunology and Immunochemistry; Advanced instruction on immunology, antigens, antigenic determinants, cellular immune response, genetics of response to specified antigenic stimulation. Immunoglobulins, immune-pathology, autopathology, autoimmunity, Histocompatibility genes and gene products.
👉Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases; Advanced instruction on Infectious diseases, immunology, clinical syndromes an infections, emerging infectious diseases, molecular diagnostics of infections and intensive laboratory practice in microbiology, virology and serology.
👉Petroleum Microbiology; Advanced instruction and detailed study of the carbon cycle, theories on the genesis of fossil fuels with emphasis on microbiological influence, prospecting for oil by means of microbial indicators, microbiology of the drilling process, environmental effects of fossil fuels and control of pollution.
Other areas of Postgraduate study in microbiology include;
👉Microbiology and Microbial biotechnology
