NAFDAC (National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control) is the constitutionally recognised government body saddled with responsibility of certifying food, drinks and drugs fit or safe for consumption, export, import, manufacturing, distribution, sale, use and advertisement. It is the constitutional duty of NAFDAC to ensure that poisonous food items, drinks, water, cosmetics, drugs, medical devices and other consumables are not in circulation in Nigeria….

What are the functions of NAFDAC?

NAFDAC was formed in 1993 by military decree to checkmate illicit counterfeit and adulterated drugs and food items. In January 1, 1994 NAFDAC was officially established as a “parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Health” and constitutionally, its functions and duties was expanded to go beyond just food and drugs but other consumables.

According to the Food and Drug act called the NAFDAC Act , below are the functions, duties, roles and responsibilities of NAFDAC.

1. Regulation and control

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) regulate and control the importation, exportation, manufacture, advertisement, distribution, sale and use of drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, packaged water and chemicals.

2. Ensures Quality Control

NAFDAC conducts appropriate tests and ensure compliance with standard specifications designated and approved by the council for the effective control of quality of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, packaged water, and chemicals.

3. Ensures food , drugs, and other consumables are produced in a hygienic environment

National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) undertake appropriate investigation into the production premises and raw materials for food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, bottled water and chemicals and establish a relevant quality assurance system, including certification of the production sites and of the regulated products.

4. Inspection, supervision and certification.

NAFDAC undertake inspection of imported foods, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, bottled water, and chemicals and establish a relevant quality assurance system, including certification of the production sites and of the regulated products.

5. Ensures food, drinks , drugs and other consumables meet the stipulated universal standard

NAFDAC compile standard specifications, regulations, and guidelines for the production, importation, exportation, sale and distribution of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, bottled water, and chemicals.

6. Registration

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) undertake the registration of food, drugs, medical devices, bottled water and chemicals

7. Ensures Nigerian potential exports that are edibles or consumables meet global standard.

NAFDAC control exportation and issue quality certification of food, drugs, medical devices, bottled water and chemicals intended for export

8. Set up quality control labs and research based institutions

NAFDAC is backed by law to establish and maintain relevant laboratories or other institutions in strategic areas of Nigeria as may be necessary for the performance of its functions.

There are some functions of NAFDAC that may not be stated here for now but as the society evolves the duties of NAFDAC in the NAFDAC Act may be amended to address new challenges.
