Fenugreek health benefits and side effects (disadvantages)
FENUGREEK SEEDS / METHI DANA —-
Commonly known as methi in Hindi and vendhayam in Tamil, it is a popular ingredient in many North and South Indian dishes and home remedies.
Fenugreek Nutritional value:
Fenugreek seeds and leaves are strongly aromatic and flavorful. The seeds are bitter in taste, but lose their bitterness if lightly roasted. They are rich in vitamins such as thiamin, folic acid, riboflavin, niacin, vitamins A, B6, and C, and are a rich storehouse of many minerals such as copper, potassium, calcium, iron, selenium, zinc, manganese, and magnesium. Fenugreek leaves are a rich source of vitamin K as well.
Fenugreek is taken by mouth for diabetes, menstrual cramps, high cholesterol, and many other conditions.
In foods, fenugreek is included as an ingredient in spice blends. It is also used as a flavoring agent in imitation maple syrup, foods, beverages .
It can used as in form of salads , Sprouts , methi water , green vegetables , parathas . In manufacturing, fenugreek extracts are used in soaps and cosmetics.
How does fenugreek work ?
Fenugreek appears to slow absorption of sugars in the stomach and stimulate insulin. Both of these effects lower blood sugar in people with diabetes.

1- Acts as antacid :
People who have the problem of acidity can try having soaked fenugreek seeds empty stomach in the morning. Have one teaspoon of soaked fenugreek seeds every day in the morning to relieve the problem of acidity.
2- Helps in controlling diabetes:
Soaked fenugreek seeds work wonders in regulating blood sugar levels. One can also have fenugreek water to control their blood sugar level. You can also try having sprouted fenugreek seeds as they have 30 – 40 per cent more nutrients than just soaked fenugreek seeds.
3- Aids digestion:
Soaked fenugreek seeds help keep acidity away, which in turn also promotes good digestion.

The right way to have fenugreek seeds :
A tablespoon of soaked fenugreek seeds should be consumed first thing in the morning empty stomach. If you do not like the taste, you can add them to your dals and curries.
Do not consume more than a tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in a day. You should try having the seeds every day for atleast 20 days to see visible results.

DISADVANTAGES AND SIDE EFFECTS OF FENUGREEK SEED —
Fenugreek is LIKELY SAFE for people when taken in amounts normally found in foods. Side effects may include diarrhea, stomach upset, bloating, gas .
It may also cause allergic reactions in some people, including symptoms of nasal congestion, coughing, wheezing, and facial swelling.
Fenugreek oil is also believed to cause bad body odour in its users or consumers.
