Who is an Anatomist?
An anatomist is a biological scientist trained to study the forms and structure of living things.
Significance of Anatomy: We apply the knowledge of anatomy in fields such as clinical embryology, prosthetics, trichology, forensics, anthropology, mortuary science, cosmetology, medical genetics, virtual science, imaging etc to deliver health care services. Anatomy is a core branch of medicine especially surgery as the surgeon must have an excellent knowledge of the human body to be able to carry out surgical operations.
In Nigeria Anatomy as a course is studied in National University Commission (NUC) Accredited universities and not in polytechnic or colleges of education. Anatomy is a four year course in after which your will be awarded a BSc certificate in Human Anatomy. After, University education, all anatomy students are mandated to for the the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Anatomy in most Nigerian universities is made up of Gross Anatomy, Embryology, Histology, cadaver dissection and even Physiology,

Where can an anatomist work in Nigeria?
Someone once asked me if this question of where an Anatomist can work and “where can an anatomist work in the Hospital”…In Nigeria, Anatomy is an old course but also an evolving profession. Early anatomists in Nigeria, were mainly restricted to working as lecturers in the University were they reach medical students , dental students, nursing students and other basic medical science students. Now, this this no longer the case as the many evolving fields in Medicine now require the services of an anatomy major especially in the area of medical research, mortuary science , prosthetic science, surgical sciences, hospital management etc.
An anatomists can work in the following areas:
1. Anatomists are generally employed in the health care sector while working on their research work.
2 They may work in college laboratories or medical centres or universities.
3. Many anatomists carry out their research while teaching.
4. Some of them train scientists or doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists or other health care professionals.
5. Some of the anatomists work in government agencies or scientific publishing firms.
6. There is also job scope for anatomists in private companies that manufacture artificial limbs or organs – Prosthetic companies.
7. An Anatomist work hand in hand with surgeons, physiotherapists and other health care providers.
8. There will be more frontiers for anatomy graduates as the world advances.
