This is a SPECIAL and NEEDFUL scan, which is also known as a mid-pregnancy scan, which takes a close look at your baby and your womb (uterus).

The sonographer, who is the trained person carrying out the scan will check that your baby is developing normally, and look at where the placenta is lying.
This scan is usually carried out when you’re between 18 and 21 weeks pregnant, but it may be carried out later than 21 weeks.

The anomaly scan is offered to everybody, but you don’t have to have it if you don’t want to.
The scan checks for major physical abnormalities in your baby, although it can’t pick up every problem.

The anomaly scan is carried out in the same way as the dating scan. It produces a 2-dimensional (2-D) black and white image that gives only a side view of the baby.

Also called the ‘ structural’ or the congenital anomaly scan’. Ideally performed at 19-20 weeks of gestation or pregnancy.

As the names suggest this scan looks at important fetal structures and for any anomalies they may have developed.

It is a very detailed scan that takes an hour or so. For many women this is the last scan they will have before birth and it’s incredible to take it all in. 💫

The scan is usually a combination of abdominal and vaginal ultrasound and a reasonably full bladder is helpful as it helps the uterus to rise up behind the pubic bone.

The scan starts with checking the most important part, babies heart is still beating away. ♥️

The following structures are then assessed in detail:

-Heart chamber function, direction of blood flow and rhythm.

-Growth measurements to ensure each body part is growing in accordance with gestation including femur length, abdominal circumference, head circumference, bi-parietal diameter ( bones in the skull)

-Structure of the spine, skull, facial bones, kidneys, bladder, stomach, limbs, hands and feet, diaphragm, hernia,

-Amount of amniotic fluid

– length of the cervix to ensure it is ‘long and closed’

-The position of the placenta which on my case was ‘ low lying’ and sitting completely across my cervix.
