I know a doctor who recently used close to 6million Naira to set up a hospital in Nigeria. Depending on the capacity and facilities of the proposed hospital, it may take close to even #50 million Naira or even #20 billion Naira to set up a world class private hospital.

Because I believe you want to start small, let me give you a breakdown of how a medical doctor with 5 years working experience conveniently used 6 million Naira to set up a hospital in one of the states in Nigeria.

How to set up a private hospital in Nigeria including cost in Naira

Registration

My doctor friend conceived the hospital name and went to corporate affairs commission to register it as a business name for about #50,000 Naira. Thereafter he moved to the state ministry of health and officially got certification to establish a clinic after fulfilling all the statutory requirements (will write about this later). He paid about #100,000 to register his hospital with the ministry of health.

Building/Premises

Of course you know a hospital becomes existent with a physical structure on ground. Not every doctor have the capital(money) or patience to build a hospital building from the scratch.. It is rigorous.. You will need to buy land, and pay architect, bricklayers, electricians, masons, carpenters etc to put up a structure. You will even need to get approval from government to erect a structure. This doctor friend of mine bypassed all these obstacles or bottlenecks and went straight to rent a structure in the city-centre for #800,000 yearly including agent fee. He also spent some good money to renovate the new hospital premises to “hospital standard”.

Hospital Equipments

My doctor colleague spent about 2.5 million Naira to buy hospital and theatre equipments plus their installations… The hospital is almost ready. He is a surgeon, so you should understand that hospital opened by a surgeon are usually more expensive because of theatre equipments, monitors and cost of running an operating room.

Drugs and hospital consumables

Yes…one of the requirements for running a hospital is a functional dispensary with up to date medications. This doctor spent about #300,000 Naira to stock the hospital dispensary with medicines and consumables. You can now see that starting a hospital business in Nigeria or anywhere in the world involves a lot of money.

Hospital staff

A hospital is as good as its staff. What use is a private hospital without competent doctors, nurses, lab scientists (optional), pharmacists (optional) , cleaners, accounts manager, and security personnels. When the hospital initially kicked off, patronage was low as expected and my colleague paid close to #500,000 monthly as wage bill. This was not easy for him but the hospital is a year old and booming with patients now.

Furniture, fixtures,fittings and stationeries

You will spend close to #250,000 to furnish your consulting room, the nurses station and your doctor’s office. You will also spend good money to get stationeries, papers and design a patient’s case note.

Electricity

As a country, Nigeria is yet to achieve the milestone of stable power supply. Electricity here means buying a good generator to power your hospital. Please buy a generator whose fuel consumption is economical and pocket friendly.
