Unlike doctors who work in a hospital setting, military doctors have guaranteed workout time. Physical Training (PT), is a daily and required workout that all service members must partake in. With daily exercise activities, military doctors can keep themselves healthy while also helping others do the same.

Military doctors typically don’t determine where they are stationed. However, they are able to select a few destination points for their assignment, but only those who are very lucky will be assigned to their first choice. A former military doctor explained that relocation happened often throughout his career.

Let me give each brief history of the first Nigerian military doctor….

His name is Dr Walter Eze. He’s regarded as the First Nigerian Military doctor, Dr. Walter C. Eze was born on November 13th. 1925, to the family of His Royal Highness, Michael Eze, Okofia I and Eze n’Ukpo, the traditional ruler of Ukpo Kingdom, in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra state.

He got his secondary school education at the prestigious Dennis Memorial Grammar School(DMGS), Onitsha; where he studied from 1941 to 1945. He then moved to Canada in 1947 where he studied Medicine. He further moved to the United States of America where he took a Masters degree on Experimental Surgery. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Army where he attained the rank of Captain before he returned to Nigeria to be the traditional ruler of his community Ukpo. He was once the secretary general of the Dennis Memorial Grammar School(DMGS) Old Boys’ Association Worldwide.

On 15th September 1959, He founded the Toronto hospital Onitsha, where he was the Medical Director. In that same year, he married his love, Justina Nebechianya Okafor and the marriage was blessed with four children.

He is the elder brother to the popular Oil mogul and billionaire, Arthur Eze.
He died on November 6th. 1991.
