Hello everyone! Before I go to the main topic of today, I want to talk about the similarities and differences between Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid. iIt has become very important because a lot of persons tend to always confuse these two… however they work hand-in-hand and can be used concurrently for pimples and other skin blemishes.
🔵Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid are oil-soluble and effective topicals for acne. Both can be used together or separately, to treat acne. The difference lies in their mechanism and the type of acne they are best for. Remember – there is no magic bullet for treating acne the same way for everyone.
BENZYOL PEROXIDE: An oil soluble topical antibacterial agent that is effective against all kinds of acne lesions (blackheads, whiteheads, and papules, pustules, cysts). It is bactericidal, meaning it kills bacteria, rather than simply slowing down their growth. It also works fairly quickly (few days to a week). The cool thing about Benzoyl Peroxide over other antibacterial agents is that it does not develop bacterial resistance, meaning it won’t reduce or eliminate its effectiveness over time. Another thing to keep in mind is that, you don’t need a super high concentration of BPO for it to work. Studies (1) have shown that lower concentrations work just as well as higher doses and cause less irritation, so there is no need to go higher than 5%. Though, if you do choose to use 10% BPO, that’s fine. Just be mindful of the side effects; i.e. dryness, irritation, increased sensitivity.
SALICYLIC ACID : An oil soluble topical agent that can help unclog the oil, dirt and dead skin cells from your pores. For this reason, SA is better at treating whiteheads and blackheads. The cool thing about Salicylic Acid is that it has desmolytic (ability to disrupt cellular junctions) and comedolytic (ability to unplug dead skin cells and built-up oils that cause acne blemishes) properties. SA can also cause irritation and dryness.
Indication for Salicylic Acid:
For ichtyosis, corns, calluses, dandruff, psoriasis. eczema, acne, warts.
So depending on the type of acne you have, you may need either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide or a combination of both!
