How do you become a Certified Registered Nurse Anaesthetist (CRNA) in Nigeria? FOLLOW THE STEPS.
First step to becoming a certified registered nurse anaesthetist is to become a registered nurse. CRNA is a master degree programme offered by very few schools In Nigeria… and the first step to be eligible for this program is to be a registered nurse. As a registered nurse trained in any of the schools of nursing, you can then apply to be become a CRNA.
Requirements for admission into the school of anesthestic nurses
You must be a registered nurse (RN) or BSc Nurse with a current license. Hold the West African School Certificate or NECO or General Certificate of Education, Ordinary Level with credits in: English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Having experience as a nurse in the theatre unit is an added advantage.
Duration
The Nurse Anaesthetist training programme is of 18 months duration (1 year 6 months) .
While on admission
The courses in the programme are designed just like a 400 level course in Anaesthesia, arranged in three semesters and with a prefix of NAP (Nurse Anaesthetist Programme). Anaesthetic nursing is equivalent to a masters degree program.

3. School of Post Basic Nursing, Anaesthetics, Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Enugu
4. School of Post Basic Nursing Anaesthestist Programme : University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu state.
5. MMSH Umar Ringim School of Post Basic Anaesthesia Nursing, Kano are currently selling admission forms.
What do nurse anaesthetist do?
Certified registered nurse anesthetists administer anesthesia to patients during surgery or for a medical procedure. These professionals often work within teams alongside anesthesiologists. Before administering anesthesia, CRNAs conduct patient evaluations to decide the type and amount of anesthesia they need to use. They also discuss any existing allergies, health conditions, or medications to ensure proper administration. Nurse anaesthetist can work under the supervision of an anaesthesiologist or autonomously.
Nurse Anesthetist salary in Nigeria
A nurse anesthetist earns higher than a registered nurse. In most government hospitals, a senior nurse anesthetist earns about #180,000 – #200,000 Naira monthly as salary in Nigeria. The salary of a nurse anaesthetist working in some private hospitals is around #160,000 – #180,000 Naira. Most private hospitals do not have nurse anesthetists as permanent staff, they are only called upon for a surgical procedure and promptly paid for their services.
