A Dietician is a person who studied Nutrition and Dietetics( formerly known or depending on the university as human nutrition) in a university and obtained his or her degree and license to operate as a dietician.

Dietitians are regulated healthcare professionals licensed to assess, diagnose, and treat nutritional problems.They educate groups, individuals, or families about nutrition, food, and it’s connection to disease or weightloss ✔ problems to help them live healthy lifestyles.

Dietitians also help people maintain a healthy weight and help them to set and achieve goals as part of their health maintenance. They may also design programs for food services that provide meals for clients, such as schools or hospitals. In this case, they would check nutrition standards and ensure the food is within health and safety codes.

A dietician can be found working in cafeterias, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, or clinics. Some may be self-employed with their own practice.

How to become a registered Nutritionist in Nigeria?

First have 5 credit passes in relevant subjects including Maths and English in WAEC or NECO or GCE. Other compulsory subjects you must passes depending on the tertiary institution you are applying to include Biology, Agricultural Science Chemistry and Physics.

Thereafter, apply for JAMB/UTME and get at least 200 jamb score to be eligible for POST-UTME (your university or polytechnic of choice may set a lower or higher cut-off for POST-UME). Ensure you pass the university’s entrance exam for Food and Nutrition or Nutrition and Dietetics or Food Technology depending on how it is called in your chosen institution. If you pass you will be given admission and the journey of becoming a registered Nutritionist or Dietitian is almost completed.

After gaining admission, students of Nutrition and Dietetics have the opportunity to participate in a broad multidisciplinary study fulfilling the gap between the fields of applied medical science, food science, and research in the field of management.

In addition, they also have the opportunity to do an internship for a period of a year as a private agreement between the University and the professional body (the Association of Dietitians of Nigeria).

Upon completion of the program “Nutrition and Dietetics,” students are offered the opportunity to obtain essential knowledge and skills before graduating. Applicative activities include education, researches, preventive actions and therapy in food-related areas, aimed at improving or maintaining good state of health throughout life.

After becoming certified as a dietitian, it is important you enrol as a member of the Association of Dietitians of Nigeria which is regulated by the Nutrition and Dietetics Council of Nigeria.

You are now a registered Nutritionist or Dietitian in Nigeria (RDN).
