Cough can be very distressing for both adults and babies. It causes chest pain, throat pain fever, catarrh, fatigue, fussiness in babies, poor sleep and body aches. There are many causes of cough but pneumonia, flu, COVID-19, sore throat are the most common reasons people cough these days….
Before you go and see a doctor, there are some home remedies that have been put forward to cure cough. In Nigeria and many developing countries, palm oil with sugar is the readily available home remedy for cough. It is given to children or adults with cough to soothe their throats.
Preparations
Very easy. Some quantity of red palm oil (the top) is mixed thoroughly with an appropriate amount of sugar. Some parents may bleach the palm oil before mixing with sugar.
Dosage
Depending on the age….. one or two teaspoonful is given to babies. Adults may take more spoons.
CAVEAT: DO NOT GIVE BABIES WITHIN ONE YEAR OF AGE BECAUSE OF THE RISK OF ASPIRATION AND ASPIRATION PNEUMONITIS. MEANING THE PALM OIL MAY MISTAKENLY GO THROUGH THE WRONG WAY AND ENTER THE LUNGS THEREBY IRRITATING IT. IT CAN ALSO CHOKE BABIES. BE WARNED.
Does Palm oil and Sugar work for Cough?
Is palm oil and sugar good for cough? Yeah it is. A mixture of palm oil and sugar actually soothes the throat and suppresses the cough reflex thereby reducing the episodes of a hacking cough.
Moreover, palm oil and sugar mixture acts as an expectorant and an antitussive making a usually dry cough productive. That is, the combo helps thin out mucus/phlegm making it easy to cough out.
Palm oil also contains vitamin C and A that helps repair the damaged lining of the airway.
In summary, palm oil and sugar mixture works for cough… it however does not cure the underlining cause of the cough but it only helps to soothe the throat, blocks the irritation of the throat, suppress the cough reflex and makes it easy to cough out phlegm. It relieves the symptoms of cough.
It it however important to see a doctor if the cough remains dry or phlegm is bloody or smelly or the cough persists after 3 days. For a baby having fever with cough, take him/her to the hospital. It may be just be pneumonia. Finally, do not give palm oil and sugar to infants if they have cough.
