Can beetroot, ginger, garlic and turmeric shrink fibroid?
Let us discuss this today and i will start with this passage i culled from one Dr. Maxwell Health Foundation on Facebook….
“BENEFITS OF GINGER IN SHRINKING FIBROID
The root cause of fibroids is mostly as a result of estrogen dominance. Meaning there is too much estrogen and estrogen-like compounds circulating in the body. This disrupt the fine hormonal balance in the female body resulting into problems like fibroids, irregular menstruation, endometriosis, an ovulation, ovarian cyst, etc to name a few.
■Ginger helps to resolve estrogen dominance through various means. One important way is that it optimizes liver function.
■The liver manages the levels of hormones circulating in the body and mops up any excesses. However, the liver can be overwhelmed by the high amounts of estrogen-like compounds in many processed foods. Ginger assists the liver in detoxifying this toxic concentration.
■In addition, ginger has a stimulating effect on the endocrine glands which are important for ensuring hormonal balance. Hormonal balance deprives fibroids of the excessive estrogen they need to thrive. Once estrogen dominance is addressed, the fibroids will shrink and dissolve.
■A powerful homemade tonic can be prepared from ginger and beetroot.
Grind one tablespoon of finely chopped ginger and one tablespoon of finely chopped beetroot in a blender with a cup of water. Drink this twice a day. In a few weeks, you will begin to see dramatic results.”
How true is this claim?
NIMEDHEALTH decided to get an expert opinion from Dr Uwagboe, a practicing Gynaecologist with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). Below was his expert and science backed opinion….he said
“Fibroids are benign tumours in the womb that mostly affects women of reproductive age and the incidence is far commoner in blacks than whites.

Most fibroids do not cause any symptoms, but some women with fibroids may experience: heavy bleeding (which can be heavy enough to cause anemia) or painful periods, feeling of fullness in the pelvic area (lower abdominal area), swelling of the lower abdomen, frequent urination, pain during sex, early pregnancy loss, and lower back pain, dizziness, weakness (all due to loss od blood from the heavy menstrual flow), complications during pregnancy and labor, including a six-time greater risk of cesarean section and reproductive problems, such as infertility, which is quite rare. Though benign, fibroids may become cancer in about 1 percent of women.
It is true that oestrogen plays a key role in the development of uterine fibroids and that is why the risk increases when menstruation kicks in and decreases to a very great extent in menopause. Fibroids usually develop during a woman’s reproductive years (from around the age of 16 to 50) when oestrogen levels are at their highest. They tend to shrink when oestrogen levels are low, such as after the menopause when a woman’s monthly periods stop.
Now anything, whether drugs or herbs that will reduce the amount of circulating oestrogen in the blood will invariably help shrink fibroids (small sizes) and make them smaller but will never make them disappear. That is why there are some anti-estrogen medications used in the medical treatment of small fibroids. Also women with large fibroid sizes are given this same anti-estrogen medications to help reduce the sizes before surgery.
NOW TO YOUR QUESTION: “Can beetroot, ginger, garlic and turmeric shrink fibroid?” Well, these individual herbs have NOT been found to have anti-estrogenic property(does not reduce oestrogen circulation in the blood) and therefore lack the ability to shrink fibroids and i always advice my patients not to bank on them. The claims that ginger, garlic, turmeric or beetroots shrink or reduce fibroid sizes are all myths that originated from the social media – no documented scientific proof, research or even clinical trials.
My verdict is this: Eating or drinking beetroot, ginger, garlic and/or turmeric will not solve your fibroid problems. They infact, do not cure or shrink fibroids. SURGERY IS THE MAIN STAY ESPECIALLY FOR LARGE FIBROIDS. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY”. SEEK MEDICAL HELP. He said.
