There are 3 methods of checking if your are pregnant below:
1. Urine – commonest method, and popularised by pregnancy test kit. It is not very reliable as the chances of false negative result is very high. Very cheap, it requires the analysis of your urine.
2. Blood – Blood pregnancy test uses part of your blood called serum for analysis. Here, blood sample will be taken from you vein. It is more reliable than urine pregnancy but not confirmatory.
3. Ultrasound scan: 99.9 percent reliable amd the confirmatory test for pregnancy. For many doctors, you are only declared pregnant when confirmed by a pregnancy scan. Early Ultrasound Scan is essential in all cases of suspected pregnancy. It tells you the: Presence of a baby, location of the baby, location of the placenta, accurate age, number (Single or Multiple), and many other things. N.B: Urine or serum test kit is not confirmatory of pregnancy.
What does urine and blood pregnancy tests check?
Pregnancy tests work by checking your urine (pee) for a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). Your body only makes this hormone if you’re pregnant. HCG is released when a fertilized egg attaches to the lining of youruterus— when pregnancy begins. If your pregnancy test results are positive, it means you’re pregnant. If they’re negative, it means you’re not pregnant.
According to Planned Parenthood, pregnancy tests are most accurate when you take them after you have already missed your period.
Pregnancy test test kit will be less accurate if it’s expired or if you don’t use it the right way. So always check the expiration date on the package, and carefully read the directions that come with your pregnancy test.
