Can I take Pregnatone and folic acid together?
A pregnant woman asks:
Good morning doctor. I am 20 weeks pregnant for my first baby and I am seeing my doctor every 3 weeks for my routine antenatal visits. I was placed pregnatone which I take daily. Please I want to know if I can combine pregnatone with folic acid when taking it.
Sir, please I want to also know the benefits of taking folic acid in pregnancy.
Thank you Sir.
My reply:
Thank you for reaching out. Pregnatone already contains 400mcg of folic acid which is the recommended dose for pregnant women daily. It also contains iron, vitamin bcomplex, vitamin c and even calcium. So no need to take pregnatone and folic acid tablets together. Choose one. Take pregnatone alone it contains all the essential vitamins and minerals for a healthy pregnancy.
Now to the benefits of taking folic acid in Pregnancy….
Dr Chudi explains it all:
1 ● Folic acid is a form of folate (a B vitamin) that everyone needs.
2● If you can get pregnant or are pregnant, folic acid is especially important.
3● Folic acid protects unborn babies against serious birth defects, called neural tube defects. These birth defects happen in the first few weeks of pregnancy, often before a woman knows she is pregnant.
4● You can get folic acid from vitamins and fortified foods, such as breads, pastas and cereals.
5● Folate is found naturally in foods such as leafy green vegetables, oranges, and beans.
6● Folic acid can have a powerful effect on female fertility, both before and after conception.
7● For women who are struggling to conceive, folic acid can help prevent early pregnancy defects that can lead to miscarriage. Folic acid might also help prevent other types of birth defects and early pregnancy loss (miscarriage).
8● Folic acid and female fertility benefits don’t stop there.
9● Everyone needs folic acid to be healthy. But it is especially important for women:
10● Since about half of all pregnancies in the world are unplanned, we recommend all women get enough folic acid even if you are not trying to get pregnant.
11● Folic acid also helps to keep the blood healthy by helping red blood cells form and grow.
12● Not getting enough folic acid can lead to a type of anemia called folate-deficiency anemia.
13●Folate-deficiency anemia is more common in women of childbearing age than in men.
14● The recommendation is 400 to 600 micrograms of folic acid daily in ALL women Believing-For-Babies.
