✓Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin medication.

Dosage✨✨
✓ 800mcg orally daily in 2 or 4 divided doses.

Route✨✨
When used as abortion Pills, Misoprostol can be administered orally, sublingual, intravaginally and rectally.

✓Misoprostol is taken by mouth when used to prevent gastric ulcers.

Mechanism of action✨✨

✓This agent causes cervical ripening with softening and dilation of the cervix.
✓ Misoprostol a prostaglandin analogue, binds to myometrial cells to cause strong myometrial contractions leading to expulsion of tissue
✓ In peptic ulcers: Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog that inhibits basal and nocturnal gastric acid secretion through direct stimulation of prostaglandin E1 receptors on parietal cells in the stomach.

Indications for use✨✨

✓It is used to prevent and treat stomach and duodenal ulcers
✓ It is used to induce labor
✓ It is also used to cause an abortion or termination of pregnancy
✓ It is used treat postpartum bleeding due to poor contraction of the uterus

Side effects✨✨
✓diarrhea.
✓abdominal pain.
✓headache.
✓severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
✓anemia.
✓abnormal heart beat.
✓chest pain.
✓gas (flatulence)

NOTE✨✨✨
✓ Misoprostol hasn’t been used as first line treatment of peptic ulcers. Proton pump inhibitors like the Omeprazole and rabeprazole are now the drugs of choice for peptic ulcers and hyperacidity.
✓ It has not shown stronger effects on peptic ulcer treatment as compared to other peptic ulcer treatment.
✓ It is not apparently used due to introduction of better treatment options with lesser side effects.
