Banned Cough Syrups in Nigeria
After a detailed investigative documentary by the BBC on the massive abuse of codeine containing cough syrups by youths in 2018, the Federal Government via NAFDAC quickly banned all codeine containing cough syrups same year.
Please always check the label to ensure that the over counter cough syrup you are about to buy does not contain any form of codeine. Codeine is a drug of addiction and has destroyed many youths.
Can I give my infant or child cold or cough medicine?
According to MEDICINE.NET, “the short answer is probably not. The FDA says that over-the-counter cold medications should not be used in children younger than age 2. The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend any over-the-counter cold medications for children younger than age 4.”
This is because most cough syrups contains aspirin, codeine or promethazine. Aspirin can cause Reye’s syndrome, a condition that can cause swelling of the brain and liver in children less than 16 years. Codeine and promethazine are drugs of addiction.
