Diabetic Foot Ulcers / Acha-Ere.
One of the most common complications of Diabetes in our community now is the development of Diabetic Foot Ulcers.
“ Doctor this wound appeared on my leg for no just cause,no injury, nor accident and it is getting to 3 months now and I have been to so many places but it has refused to heal” It is called (ACHA -ERE) which they claim to be an evil affliction by their enemies. That is the response we always get from patients with DIABETIC FOOT ULCER (DFU).
There has been a high prevalence of diabetic foot ulcer in our rural communities and the fact that patients have refused to believe the medical diagnosis makes it a challenge for them to report to the hospital during the early onset of the wound and refused to be treated in the hospital.
DFU is one of the complications of Diabetes.
How does it occur?
When someone has diabetes and not on medically prescribed drugs that helps to control the sugar. Complications like DIABETIC FOOT ULCER can occur due to:
1) Deposits of sugar on the walls of the blood vessels which does not allow blood to flow freely to supply some parts of the body especially the legs,the sugar on the blood vessels wall can completely be blocked and the affected leg will suffer ischemia turns blackish and a wound may develop which spreads to upper part of the leg,produces offensive odour.
2) DFU can result from physical injury which refuses to heal after your several efforts,This is so because the bacteria and other microorganisms present insides the wound feeds on the high sugar in the blood.
Many of our adults especially in Nigeria have undiagnosed diabetes and are not aware of it. Many of the patients with diabetic foot ulcers present to hospital with very high blood sugars .
Most of the wounds people get on their body especially the foot and legs may be very difficult to heal in patients with diabetes. So if you have any wound on the legs and you have gone to a chemist shop and after 2 weeks the wound has not healed , please see a doctor for assessment. It may be a DFU!
About 50 percent of poorly managed diabetic foot ulcers are mismanaged in tradimedical centers before bringing to hospital. They will assume that it is Acha-Ere and be covering it with coal tar or other black substances till the foot dies off and begins to smell and rot.
The commonest consequences of diabetic foot ulcers are AMPUTATION or DEATH.

PLEASE IF YOU KNOW ANYBODY WITH A WOUND ON THE FOOT OR THE LEG THAT HAS REFUSED TO HEAL, PLEASE TAKE HIM OR HER TO ANY STANDARD HOSPITAL FOR FURTHER TREATMENT AND EVALUATION ..
