Let me make it earlier from the start, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a sexually transmitted infection while urinary tract infection is a bacterial infection of course but not a sexually transmitted infection….
It is true that both PID and UTI are treated with appropriate antibiotics but this does not make the diseases the same. PID affects the reproductive system (ovaries, Fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix and vagina) of a woman while urinary tract infection affects the urinary system (kidneys, calyxes, ureter, bladder, and urthera of both a male and a female. However, UTI is commoner in females because of their anatomy and short urethra.
Definition of terms:
According healthline: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of the female reproductive organs. The pelvis is in the lower abdomen and includes the fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, and the uterus.Several different types of bacteria can cause PID, including the same bacteria that cause the sexually transmitted infections (STIs) gonorrhea and chlamydia. What commonly occurs is that bacteria first enter the vagina and cause an infection. As time passes, this infection can move into the pelvic organs.
According to Clevelandclinic: A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of the urinary system. This type of infection can involve your urethra (a condition called urethritis), kidneys (a condition called pyelonephritis) or bladder, (a condition called cystitis).
You can see that they are different.
Symptoms.
The most common symptoms of UTI are: Pain in the side (flank), abdomen or pelvic area,Pressure in the lower pelvis, Frequent need to urinate (frequency), urgent need to urinate (urgency) and Incontinence (urine leakage), Painful urination (dysuria) and blood in the urine, The need to urinate at night, Abnormal urine color (cloudy urine) and strong or foul-smelling urine etc.
While the common symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease are:
👉pain in the lower abdomen (the most common symptom)
👉pain in the upper abdomen
👉fever
👉painful sex
👉painful urination
👉irregular bleeding
👉increased or foul-smelling vaginal discharge
👉tiredness
Both UTI and PID can cause fever, pain during sex, vomiting, abdominal cramps etc
Tests:
For laboratory diagnosis, UTI is diagnosed based on clinical signs and symptoms and with basic investigations like urinalysis, urine MCS. for PID, you will need a high vagina swanb MCS and an abdominal scan….
Causative organism
For UTI, the commonest organism most isolated from the urine is E coli while N.gonorrhoea, chlamydia are the frequent culprit for pelvic inflammatory disease.
The good thing is, both PID and UTI can be treated with appropriate antibiotics.
