Does Milo, Bournvita, Ovaltine, cowbell choco and horlicks contain caffeine?
The most popular beverage drinks or “teas” in the Nugerian markets are milo, bournvita, ovaltine, and horlicks….because there is this general belief that milo, bournvita, cowbell choco, horlicks and ovaltine contain caffeine. Some persons even drink milo to stay awake (to prevent sleep because of its caffeine content) or fall asleep.
Today, we are going to take a look at the ingredients that make up milo, bournvita, horlicks, and ovaltine to see which of them contains caffeine.
Does milo contain caffeine?
The answer is yes…MILO® is made with four main ingredients or recipes; malt barley, milk powder, sugar and cocoa, plus 8 vitamins and minerals….you can see that coffeine is not included in the ingredients of milo but cocoa as we know it contains caffeine though is small amount.
Caffeine naturally occurs in cocoa. Milo powder contains 0.011-0.024g caffeine per 100g of MILO® i.e. 2.2mg-4.8mg per 20g serve MILO®. This is less than 10% of the caffeine found in a cup of instant coffee.
This caffeine content of milo is not enough to harm your baby during pregnancy or keep you awake from sleep.
Does bournvita contains caffeine?
Yes, bournvita contains caffeine because cocoa is its main ingredients….all cocoa contain drinks contains caffeine.

Does Ovaltine contain caffeine?
No….ovaltine is totally caffeine free….i mean ovaltine does not contain caffeine….so it is a perfect bedtime drink. Cocoa is not one of the main ingredients of ovaltine but it is there.
The ingredients in ovaltine are: Barley Malt extract (73%), milk serum concentrate, fat-reduced cocoa powder (8%), minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc), sugar, rapeseed oil, vitamins (C, E, niacin, A, pantothenic acid, B12, B6, B2, B1, folic acid, biotin).
How much caffeine is in ovaltine? NONE according to the manufacturers. To me, as far as small cocoa quantity of cocoa is found in ovaltine, then it contains minute amount of cocoa.
Does horlicks contain caffeine?
Horlick malty drink does noy contain caffeine at all so it is a good drink for bedtime….Horlicks does not contain cocoa as one of its ingredients….
