Scientifically, uyayak is known as Tetrapleura tetraptera

Uyayak is the ibibio/efik name for Prekese or Aidan fruit.

Did you know African traditional medicine practitioners had herbs and spices that were used for contraceptive and hormone balancing effects? Example Uyayak (aidan) fruit, negro pepper, neem (spermicide) and more to mention but a few.

Aidan fruit or Tetrapleura tetraptera also known as pepper soup spice is a species of the pea family native to West Tropical Africa.
Aidan fruit has an exceptional fragrant, sweet and aromatic taste.

Uyayak (Aidan) fruit is rich in iron, potassium, calcium, zinc, phosphorus, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, and phenolic compounds. In addition, its tree bark and leaves are also packed with medicinal properties.

Uyayak Health benefits

In Cross River and Akwa Ibom States, uyayak is used to prepare food to aid post partum (new mom) recovery, healing, return of the body to near normal, shrink uterus, aid breast milk production and aid ‘after delivery’ weight loss.

Uyayak is crushed or broken into bits to flavor several dishes like white soup, pepper soup, banga soup, porridge and herbal teas.

The dry powdered fruit is used in soap making to increase antimicrobial activity, anti-aging, sun block effects as well as improve the foaming ability of soaps.

The strong smell of Uyayak fruit is said to act as repellents for insects, slugs and snails in gardens.

Uyayak is used for medicinal purposes due to its antioxidant, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory effects.

It is used traditionally to:

– relief joint /body aches and pain
– soothe respiratory symptoms
– boost immunity, mood
– enhance performance, libido
– aid contraception
– aid digestion
– treat worm infestation
– aid wound healing
– quieten the nervous system (convulsions)
– relief fever

In addition, the flavoring properties of many herbs and spices tend to reduce the use of salt and this has additional cardiovascular health benefits!

Uyayak is a fertility booster in both males and females. In males, Uyayak has been reported to help to boost sperm count, increase libido, increase testosterone level, cures premature ejaculation and weak erection. In women, uyayak is a fertility herb that helps to boost ovulation, regularises menstruation, increase libido and increase a woman’s chances of getting pregnant…. Uyayak has also been reported to help shrink ovarian cyst.

Uyayak for fibroid treatment

Though not proven, Uyayak is believed to help prevent and shrink uterine fibroid. A woman once described uyayak as a fibroid melter.

  1. Uyayak, as I know can also clean your system if chewed it fresh. I was having constipation last few days, and I didn’t have anything to clear my tommy, so I had Uyayak and I chewed it fresh. The next morning my entire system was flushed.
    So I love ❤️ uyayak 😀
