Yellow fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. The “yellow” in the name refers to the jaundice (yellowish discoloration of the eyes) that affects some patients.
“Hemorrhagic” means that there is excessive loss and break down of blood.
Symptoms of yellow fever include fever, headache, jaundice, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting and fatigue, very similar to malaria. So you probably won’t know the difference.
A small proportion of patients who contract the virus develop severe symptoms and complications which often involves vital organs. Approximately half of those die within 7-10 days.
Large epidemics of yellow fever (as what is currently on going in Nigeria)occur when infected people introduce the virus into heavily populated areas with high mosquito density and where most people have little or no immunity, due to lack of vaccination.
In these conditions, infected mosquitoes of the Aedes aegypti species ( your regular mosquitoes) transmit the virus from person to person.
Well, since you can’t identify which mosquito carries this virus, I’d advice you go get vaccinated.
The vaccine is extremely effective, it is also safe and affordable. A single dose of yellow fever vaccine is sufficient to grant sustained immunity and life-long protection against yellow fever disease. A booster dose of the vaccine is not needed.
The vaccine provides effective immunity within 10-30 days.
Yellow fever currently has no cure.
Aside this, try to take preventive measures against mosquito bites, even in the afternoon. Use insecticides, mosquito nets, cut overgrown bushes or stay away from them as much as possible, if you must enter a bush; gear up! Use mosquito repellent creams (odomos and it’s likes), clear off stagnant waters and dispose off refuse.
