What are ovarian cysts?
The term ovarian cyst just means a fluid-filled sac within the ovary, and there are many different types—all with different treatments.

DIAGNOSING AN OVARIAN CYST
Your doctor can detect an ovarian cyst during a routine pelvic examination. They may notice swelling on one of your ovaries and order an ultrasound test to confirm the presence of a cyst. An ultrasound test (ultrasonography) is an imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce an image of your internal organs. Ultrasound tests help determine the size, location, shape, and composition (solid or fluid filled) of a cyst.
If you’ve suddenly noticed ovary pain along with symptoms of infection — such as fever, bleeding, or vomiting — it’s a good idea to see your doctor as soon as possible. If your pain is less severe, consider keeping a diary to log when you have it, how much it hurts, and any other things you notice. For example, you may find that you have recurring ovary pain only around the middle of your menstrual cycle, such as with mittelschmerz.
