FLASH: “34 doctors and 18 nurses have tested positive for COVID-19 in Kano” – Health Commissioner

It is like the COVID19 apprehension in Kano is far from over…. With over 600 coronavirus related deaths in 4 weeks according to the Presidential Task Force on COVID19, the health commissioner of Kano today told the Press that about 34 medical doctors and 18 nurses have tested positive for coronavirus. According to the Commissioner, Dr. Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, one of the doctors have died from the complications of coronavirus.

Dr Kabiru’s revelation was corroborated by the
Kano State chairman of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Comrade Ibrahim Muhammad, on Wednesday.

He said 18 of the 86 samples of nurses taken returned positive.

He explained that nine of them are from National Orthopedic Hospital, Dala seven from Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and two from state hospitals.

The Kano State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), on Wednesday also lamented the massive infection of their colleagues in the frontline with coronavirus and urged the government to make more personal protective equipments available. They said that 34 doctors have tested positive to the novel coronavirus in the state.

The NMA Chairman, Sanusi Bala, told a correspondent of the NIGERIAN HEALTH BLOG in Kano that one of the confirmed cases (a doctor) has died.

Mr Bala explained that many of the victims were the doctors working at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) and other private clinics in the state.

He said many of them were infected through normal clinical routines while attending to unsuspected COVID-19 cases.

Both the NMA and NANNM appealed to government to provide health professionals with Personal Protective Equipment(PPEs) for them to conveniently discharge their responsibility.

The 52 health workers that have been infected with COVID19 in Kano are currently in Isolation and receiving prompt treatment according to our correspondent.
