A doctor treating COVID-19 patients at Irrua Specialist Hospital has contracted the virus, 6 has died of Lassa fever.
This morning on The Channels Television’s “Sunrise Daily” show, the National President of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Aliyu Sokombo, revealed that one of the doctors taking care of the sick coronavirus patients at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) in Edo has contracted the virus. He also said over 6 doctors have died this year of Lassa Fever across Nigeria.
The NARD President went further to plead with the federal government to insure the lives of doctors and other frontline health workers battling the deadly COVID-19 and Lassa fever. Amongst
In his words:
“Just yesterday again, one of our doctors in ISTH, Irrua had tested positive for the COVID-19 disease. What that means is that these doctors that are testing positive to various diseases are being left alone to take care of themselves.”
Amongst other complaints, Dr Aliyu also said doctors are poorly remunerated and are made to pay from their pockets when they fall ill in the course of their duty coupled with the meagre hazard allowance.
“There is no form of life insurance for us. There is no form of compensation when we die or fall sick due to the nature of our jobs. To say the least, what these doctors benefit at the end of every month as hazard allowance is N5,000, and let me remind you that six medical doctors have died of Lassa fever in 2020″. Sokomba said.
