Goodmorning doctor, please there is a dispute in my family about the biological or real father of one of my cousins. All has not been fine with my sister’s marriage. She was romantically involved with another guy for a long time before she meet and married her present husband within the same year. Anytime she has a misunderstanding with her husband which is normal for couples, her husband always gives her hint that their first child is not his but for her first lover. It is distressing for my sister and she has decided to do something about it by insisting on a DNA paternity test to put a stop to what she called “shame”. The husband has consented to it for his own peace of mind.
Please where can they carry out the paternity test in Lagos or Abuja? How is the procedure like? What is the cost?

Thank you for writing me. I have received about 10 personal mails from my blog readers in Port Harcourt, Lagos, Calabar, Kaduna, Kano, Abuja, Benin-city, Anambra, and Ibadan enquiring about DNA paternity centres and cost.
I have been doing my research by calling different paternity labs to be sure they do the test and to confirm the cost.
This is what I came up with…..
DNA Paternity testing is an important tool available to prove or disprove a father’s biological relationship to a child. The test uses a DNA profile for each individual (both father and child) and compares the data to determine if there is a genetic match. If the child and potential father genetically match, then he is the biological father. If the data does not match, then he is excluded as the biological father.
Paternity tests can be done be before the child is born or after birth. Tests done for unborn baby is called prenatal DNA paternity testing. Here, the procedure for collecting samples (amnioncentesis and chorionic villus sampling) is invasive and can cause miscarriage. It is also very expensive.
Peternity screening done after birth is the commonest, safest, cheaper, more convenient, and non-invasive.
How is it done?
The testing is performed by collecting buccal cells found on the inside of a person’s cheek using a buccal swab or cheek swab. These swabs have wooden or plastic stick handles with a cotton on synthetic tip. The collector rubs the inside of a person’s cheek to collect as many buccal cells as possible. The buccal cells are then sent to a laboratory for testing. For paternity testing, samples from the alleged father and child would be needed. For maternity testing, samples from the alleged mother and child would be needed.
How Long Does a DNA Paternity Test Result Take?
Most laboratories usually can process results in 2 to 3 days from the time your samples are received. There are also expedited methods to ensure a fast turnaround time if results are needed more urgently, such as for adding a name to a birth certificate, for immigration or court cases.
