Sildenafil commonly called viagra or blue pills or ‘manpower’ is a blue, film-coated , rounded, diamond-shaped tablet or medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) or weak erection in men. It is a sex enhancing drug that many men claim improves their sexual performance. It is normally taken 20 to 30 minutes before sex and its action can last for up to 2 to 4hours.
Sildenafil citrate comes in 25mg, 50mg, 100mg or 200mg. It is better to take a low dose to avoid overdosage. A packet of sildenafil contains three tablets or blue pills.
Blue pills works by increasing blood flow to the penis to help a man get and keep an erection.
Sildenafil does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, and hepatitis B. These infections are best prevented with proper use of condoms.
Sildenafil has not been found to enhance sex in women. The concept of female viagra is still highly disputed.
The usual recommended dose of sildenafil is between 25mg to 100mg. Daily dosage should not exceed 100mg. Elderly men (greater than) 65years should take 25mg before sex .
Approximately 15 percent of persons who take sildenafil comes down with side effects. The common side effects include: facial flushing, nuisea, dizziness, headaches, diarrhoea, nasal congestion or running nose, anorgasm,prolonged erection(priapism), stomach pain, rash, urinary tract infections, palpitations, muscle pain, back pain, inability to differentiate between colours green and blue, hearing loss or ringing in the ear (tinnitus), and sudden visual loss. In addition, stroke, heart attack, irregular heart beats and death have been reported in men who take sildenafil (though rarely).
Persons with heart diseases like hypertension or cardiomyopathy should not take the blue pills. Sickle cell patients should not take viagra as they are already at risk of priapism. Do not combine viagra with drugs like nitrates, rifampicin, ketoconazole, erythromycin,REVATIO, other drugs used to treat hypertension, and other drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction like Cialis and Levitra. Previous stroke patients should avoid viagra in its entirety.
The cost/price of sildenafil is between #700 naira to #5,000 naira depending on the brand and location. Viagra is sold in pharmacies, chemist shops and big supermarkets. Online supermarkets like Jumia, Jiji, Konga, Ajebo, Alibaba, and Amazon sell sildenafil and they deliver it at your doorstep.
Update: I have seen that many patient with sickle cell anemia who take sildenafil come down with very painful priapism. It is out of bound for these group of persons.
