Garlic, Bitter kola, Lemon and Palmwine cannot cure coronavirus – Health Minister
The Honourable Minister of State for Health, Sen. Olorunnimbe Mamora has cautioned Nigerians against the use of herbal products and other unverified medicines to protect themselves from Coronavirus (COVID-19). The minister also advised Nigerians to avoid handles that market such products or encourage the use of palmwine, bitter kola, garlic, and lemon for the treatment of coronavirus.
Mamora spoke in Abuja when he appeared on the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)’s Forum.
“There have been so many claims by some Nigerians that bitter kola can be used to cure coronavirus. It is true that bitter kola has anti-viral properties, but I am not sure how the anti-viral properties affect coronavirus. I have also heard of garlic, lemon, palm wine, and even chloroquine.
“We caution against the use of so many herbal medicines because science has a basis and there is a procedural process to laying claims to whatever,’’ he said.

Senator Mamora advised Nigerians not to panic, declaring that people should allow themselves to be “ruled by facts, not fears”. He assured Nigerians that the country will defeat coronavirus but we must all play our part even as the government is at the fore-front of curbing the virus.
He said that the best prevention was to practice good personal hygiene by washing hands under running tap water with soap or ash, as well as the steady use of hand sanitisers.
Recall that, theFederal Ministry of Health has confirmed a coronavirus disease (COVID-19) case in Lagos State, Nigeria. The case, which was confirmed on the 27th of February 2020, is the first case to be reported in Nigeria since the beginning of the outbreak in China in January 2020.
The case is an Italian citizen who works in Nigeria and returned from Milan, Italy to Lagos, Nigeria on the 25th of February 2020. He was confirmed by the Virology Laboratory of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, part of the Laboratory Network of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. The patient is clinically stable, with no serious symptoms, and is being managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos.
